Doris Day and sailors in old Monterey

While it is clear that the truly loving Doris Day lives south of Carmel-by-the-Sea and that her stunningly posh and  impeccably maintained hotel is no longer run by her, that siren of swing, the perfectly polished and effortlessly charming Miss Day's  aura, the style of the movie herorines she portryed,  delightfully perminate the Monterey Penisula.  While the effects of  all that lovely big money and style at Pebble Beach is NASCAR and the military lessen the feel of effortless, comfortable chic on the Monterey Peninsula on a whole the glory ofall that lovely big money in Pebble Beach, Carmel Valley and Carmel-by-the Sea and it's relaxed state while at the beach, on the golf course, riding, surfing is a genre of style that is found only on Californi'a central coast.  Politely establshment doing what one does when not running nations or Fortune 50 corporations. It is rather like not be surprised to see La DAY, she of the rated G films and the smoking hot swing band era, walking a pack of pooches, wearing a yellow cashmere turtleneck sweater and houndstooth pants...perhaps a bit last year but really very chic.   There is clearly an unwritten rule that casual golf-beach-ranch and I mean ranch owner is not frumpy but loache  It is!  But know the signs well  or perish.  It is all just for fun.
In addition to Mrs. Trotter's Antiques, Mission San Jaun Bautista (San Benito County), The Victorian Cafe and the Robert Talbot of Carmel, I've found the Bookhaven in Monterey.  It has more of every type of book  than could be described and has twoof the most charming men behind the counter.  The stacks are overflowing with every sort of hard back book.   What a delight!  In the kindle era, when the joy of holding a book  is fast becoming something only ladies and gentlemen of a certain age know and the surviving chains sell  only the less expensive paperbacks the store has an assortment of titles and presses that will serve ant private collector and the lover of the art ofmaking books.   I purchased two immaculate Folio Society books at amazing prices and have thereby sated my desire to purchase anything for the month.
The Bookhaven also has the very pleasing if unintential effect enabling one to observe the species HUNK SERVICEMAN, without causing said animal to be alarmed., by being across the street from the triangle shaped, (this is Monterey after all and very few streets are straight, though the straights do seem to have at least a visable majority amongst the strolling population) bus island.   The island is a gathering point for the very fit, very handsome, very unaware of the sexual spark they charge the air with, young servicemen wishing to hook up to transit back to the Presidio or Navalbase.  Be  forewarned my Amazon's and other Appollo lovering predators,  the most desireable ones,  the single20 somethings, travel in small packs.  The thing to do is to find one who has been separated or become lost from his pack.  Like a  sub-saharan watering hole the transit triangle serves well this need.  Be also forewarned that like said sub-saharan watering holes there is alway's the potential that bigger, quicker hunters lurk in the area.  So there is also the risk that the species Appolo's pack returns...that willoften happen but take heart the passing 4 x 4 full of said  sorts can lead to dens full of the protien we need.
Mount! Bugle sounds, snap Celine and Hermes buckles, to the HUNT!
